A quick note to let you know that “Lifeguard,” my newest personal essay, has been published by the wonderful online journal Connotation Press: An Online Artifact.
“Lifeguard” started out as one of a series of essays I wrote based on the four seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. “Lifeguard” was, of course, the essay focused on a memory from summer. Over time, however, it morphed into something that has elements of that, true…but is also something different. This so often happens when writing creative nonfiction…you start out thinking you’re headed in one direction, and you wind up somewhere else. The best writing usually happens when you let your mind go where it wants to, instead of where you thought you’d direct it.
