Thanks to the wonderful reception for LITTLE WHITE: THE FERAL CAT WHO FOUND A HOME, a new children’s book is in the works, set to be released later this year by Writers Coffee Bar Press. TRIBBS: THE CAT WHO WAS SO HANDSOME! will be Book 2 in the Stray Cat Stories series.
Both LITTLE WHITE and TRIBBS are based on true stories. If you read the first book, or read it to a young cat lover in your life, you’ll remember that one of the things that helped Little White adjust to life indoors was her love for our indoor male cat, Tribbs. Well, Tribbs had his own story waiting to be told.
I adopted Tribbs from a pet store in Nyack, New York, on a pet adoption day. I had to invent a few details about his life before that, because all I knew was that he’d been found on the streets with his mother, and the two cats had been cared for in a foster home until Tribbs’ mother was adopted, leaving him all alone. I never knew exactly where or how he was found, so that part of the story in the new book is what makes the book “based” on a true story. From that moment on, however, everything in the book is true to life…how I discovered Tribbs, who encouraged me to adopt him, and how he finally ended up with a “forever home” with me and his little sister, a kitten named Cali.
Tribbs lived to be almost 20 years old, and losing him was one of the hardest things that has happened to me in my life of rescuing, caring for, and sharing my home with animals. But writing these books helps keep the memory of special cats like Tribbs alive, and I hope encourages children to notice when stray animals need help. I also hope they will encourage everyone to adopt strays and take them in and give them the loving homes they deserve.
There’s a reason you see those “Who Rescued Who?” car magnets everywhere; when we show compassion and love to an animal, we get it back, and so much more.
I look forward to bringing Tribbs’ story to children (and the adults who will buy the book for them). The illustrator is working on illustrations now, and as soon as I have some artwork to show, I’ll post it here.
