It’s National Love Your Pet Day, and for me it’s a double celebration, because it’s also the publication date for Tribbs: The Very Handsome Cat. It took a lot of hard work to bring this heartwarming little book to the world, so today is a day to thank the illustrator, Laurel McKinstry Petersen, the publisher, Writer’s Coffee Bar Press run by MaryChris Bradley, and everyone who has supported my writing life and animal rescue efforts. portion of the proceeds from all of my children’s books is donated to animal rescue organizations.
I’m very proud of this book. It helps children understand how some animals end up as strays and the importance of stepping in and doing something to help. It also teaches what really makes someone (cat or human) handsome: “It’s who you are in your heart.”
The illustrations are charming and the story is sweet and based on the true life of one of the most good-natured cats I ever knew — my beloved Tribbs. I shared my life with Tribbs for almost 20 years. He lived with me in New York, Colorado, Maine, and Massachusetts. With his “sister” Cali, he joined me on car rides and plane flights, because one thing I would NEVER do is leave an animal behind. Once I adopted Tribbs, he had his “forever home.”
I hope Tribbs is looking down on me today purring, knowing that he’s been immortalized in this book. I love you forever, Tribbs.
