Back to Work

Life is slowly resuming. Tomorrow I start teaching in the winter/spring semester at Lasell College. I’ll be teaching “Writing 2: The Art of Life Writing,” a course designed to help freshmen improve their writing skills and complete a research paper while at the same time focusing on a particular subject: creative nonfiction. We’ll be reading a variety of short essays as well as two book-length memoirs: Maus and A Walk in the Woods.

In the meantime, I’m getting back to my own writing. To get myself jump-started, I am taking a class at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education titled “Flex Your Writing Muscle.” The course is designed to inspire some new ideas with in-class exercises and assignments. I’ve been experimenting more with fiction lately, and I wanted to give myself the opportunity to work off of assignments with deadlines set by someone besides myself. It’s been fun being a student again and interacting with other writers…and kind of nice not to be responsible for the room or the flow of the class for a change! The teacher is Daniel Gewertz, a creative writer and long-time music journalist for The Boston Herald.

That’s the quick update for now. I hope as the semester and my own writing progress, I’ll get back to blogging more regularly, too.
