My Answer When an Editor Asks if I’m Open to Suggestions

Seven months ago I sent a flash piece I wrote to a literary journal. I wrote it during a weekend writing workshop with the wonderful group Bending Genres.

Today I got a note from the editors saying they really like my writing but were hoping I’d consider a couple of edits. Was I open to it? You bet.

I worked on two lines in the piece based on their notes and sent it back. Their suggestions made it stronger, and now my fingers are crossed.

To me, a piece of writing is never really “done.” It can always be improved, or go in a slightly different direction. Once it’s published I have to let it go (unless it’s republished elsewhere), but before then…I’m always open to suggestions.
