I wrote Soul to Soul as a hopeful answer to the challenging times so many people are facing today. Many recent books have been written from places of sadness, pain, anger, and even tragedy. This is understandable as writers process the difficulties they face or observe in their lives and communities. Their goal is to examine the world we’re living in and uncover universal truths to share with readers.

My first book, a memoir-in-essays titled Message From a Blue Jay, is an example. The personal essays I wrote for that book reflect upon, for the most part, a challenging time in my life and the lessons I learned as I went through them. The natural world serves as a backdrop and teacher as I navigate the challenges of that time.

After I wrote Message From a Blue Jay, however, I felt the need to change gears completely. First, I wrote the three children’s books in the Stray Cat Stories Series to entertain children and teach about compassion for stray and feral cats. I donate a portion of the proceeds from those books to animal rescue organizations.

Soul to Soul is something different yet again. When I started writing this book, I’d fallen in love with the art of writing 100-word stories. I wanted to provide something uplifting — something readers of any age in any community could enjoy. Each story offers a moment of inspiration or revelation. Some are light and surprising; others tug at the heart (but in a positive way). Many feature unique characters and/or animals. All were written to remind us that even during challenging times we can be hopeful and resilient and find moments of joy.
